5 Pillars for Marburg

By observing the five pillars, the Muslim believer establishes his personal relationship with God through ritualised practices. These include reciting the creed, the five daily prayers, almsgiving, fasting during Ramadan and the pilgrimage to Mecca, which every Muslim is expected to undertake once in his or her life, if health and financially possible. According to Islamic understanding, the believer owes God the performance of the five pillars in return for the miracle of creation he has brought forth and the trouble God takes with human beings. On the other hand, the rituals also serve to structure the day in a spiritual way and to sharpen the sense for the essential. 

In the Marburg mosque, five pillars at the entrance to the mosque grounds point to this spiritual connection of man to God. We, as the Marburg Friends of the Mosque, are all the more pleased to be able to help artistically design this central part of the building. It is intended to be a sign of openness on both sides. On the one hand, the five pillars will become the entrance gate of an open Marburg mosque for the city society, and on the other hand, the pillars will form the entrance of the mosque community to the city of Marburg, of which the mosque will be an integral part in the future.
